The Clinical Director of Dynamic Changes Hypnosis Center, Ross Lagumina, has had success in improving the study habits of teens in "just a handful of sessions."  This is accomplished through hypnotic suggestion, use of light and sound, with audio tapes for practice at home.

Psychiatrist Alan Manevitz warns parents to rule out underlying physical or mental health issues before trying hypnosis.  Consistency and motivation seem to be key factors for success.

Hypnotherapy Good for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

A recent study reported in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that more than 3/4 (78%) of participants had improved bowel habits following hypnotherapy.  Other symptoms, such as body aches also improved.  It was shown that Hypnotherapy led to an overall improvement in patient "quality of life - psychic and physical well-being....reducing anxiety and depression."

Headache, Hypnosis, and Stress

Larry Deutsch, family physician and clinical hypnotist for 30 years, has used hypnosis successfully to ameliorate headache pain.  Hypnosis is believed to alter brain chemistry.  Monoamine Oxidase metabolizes seratonin (chemical for pain relief) and hypnosis has worked to change these levels.

A case study is presented, which shows how useful hypnosis can be.

The Smoking Test

Good Morning America followed two smokers to determine whether hypnosis could help them cut back or quit.  They'd tried so many methods, only to be unsuccessful.  A Stanford University research revealed 50% of smokers were able to quit using hypnosis. 

It has been shown, "hypnosis works best on behavior - not root causes."  Motivation is a key to success, "teaching control."

Power Over Pain

Five sessions of self-hypnosis helped Tania Lapointe to deliver her third child, Chloe, in a state of "calm, quiet and peaceful" ease, without medication.  A key issue is practice, which reduces the need for medication.  Imagination and relaxation are used to achieve pain-free childbirth.  Lapointe explains, "It was like heaven compared  to the other two."

Hypnosis has been  used medically for surgery and burn victims to eliminate or reduce pain.  One practitioner described hypnosis as a "power nap."  The best part of hypnosis seems to be in speeding the health process throughout recovery.

Is Hypnotism Science or a Sideshow?

Hypnotist Tom DeLuca appeared on ABC's Good Morning America show, hypnotizing about a dozen people in an effort to dispel myths about hypnotism.

DeLuca explained hypnosis as a "state of extreme concentration," which is a fairly common occurrence (similar to daydreaming), when the unconscious mind becomes predominant for a period of time.

Hypnosis is used clinically for depression, pain management, in dentistry, surgery, psychotherapy, and in treatment for addiction.
