Penguins' Goaltender Uses Hypnosis to Improve Game

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Johan Hedberg is using hypnosis to improve on
last season’s losing record. He has had several sessions with a sports psychologist who uses hypnosis as part of his sessions. Hedberg remarks on the season: “We didn’t win any of our last 10 games and it’s not easy to forget about that. It was ugly and disgraceful. That was the worst month I’ve ever had in my hockey career. . . I’m very anxious to get there and get started.”
Hedberg is hoping hypnosis will help him to control his temper, which had him breaking sticks over the net, as well as improve his game. Each session includes 30 minutes of hypnosis, in which he visualizes how he will handle game situations such as breakaways and tough shots.

Easing Childbirth with HypnoBirthing

Expectant mothers in Utah now have a new option for comfortable natural childbirth. Two years ago, HypnoBirthing came to the state via certified hypnotherapist Jolene Shields. HypnoBirthing is a natural childbirth curriculum developed by hypnotherapist Marie Mongan nearly twenty years ago and is good for women who want a drug-free approach to childbirth.
One of Shields' clients, Farah Bitter, relates her HypnoBirthing labor and delivery as drug-free and pain free: "I felt pressure [sensations]. But after a while of pushing, it started to become . . . uncomfortable . . . I still wouldn't describe the overall experience as painful." Shields report that for all of her clients with normal labors, hypnosis has "carried them through," with only 15% requiring any kind of drug intervention for a previously undiagnosed complication. In a state with a 95% epidural rate, this 85% unmedicated birth rate is quite an accomplishment.

Hypnosis Controversy in Court Case Against Cantor

New York City cantor Howard Nevison, age 61 is charged with sexually abusing his 12-year old nephew. Attorneys for Nevison have requested psychiatric evaluation for the boy, alleging " . . .We don't know if the child remembers real things or things that have been suggested to him."
A related motion is being argued on the premise that the case should be dropped because the therapist treating the boy was a proponent of hypnosis. [Whether hypnosis was actually used in the therapy is unclear from this news report - AS]
The First District Attorney for Montgomery County, Risa Ferman opposes the psychiatric examination and has gone on record saying the defense's argument regarding hypnosis is "simply false."
